Mission Purvodaya launched by Dharmendra Pradhan
  • Union Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched mission Purvodaya in Kolkata on 11 January 2020.
  • This programme is aimed at accelerating development of eastern India through the establishment of an integrated steel hub.
  • Government aims to transform logistics and utilities infrastructure which would change the socio-economic landscape in the eastern India.

Kolkata Port renamed as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port
  • PM Shri Narendra Modi renamed Kolkata Port as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port on the occasion of 150th celebration of the Kolkata Port Trust.
  • Several development Projects worth of Rs. 600 crores were launched.
  • On this occasion the Prime Minister released a commemorative stamp on 150th years of the Kolkata Port Trust.

India to acquire 200 fighter jets for Air Force
  • Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar has said, the government is in the process of acquiring around 200 aircraft to cope with the depleting aerial inventories of the Indian Air Force.
  • The contract for HAL-manufactured 83 LCA Tejas Mark 1 A advanced fighter jets are in the final stages.
  • The Air Force has Sukhoi 30 MKIs, Mirage 2000s, Mig 29s and the ageing Jaguars and Mig 21 Bisons in its inventory of fighter jets at present.
  • The last fleet of seven swing-wing MiG-27 fighters, which played an important role during the 1999 Kargil war, was decommissioned on December 27.

Indian Railways sign MoU with RailTel
  • Indian Railways has signed MoU with RailTel, A Mini Ratna PSU under Ministry of Railways.
  • After the successful completion of Phase 1 of execution of NIC e-Office for 50,000 users in 58 units, the MoU has been signed for the Phase 2 of the project.
  • In phase 2, RailTel will register 39000 users over 34 Railway divisions on NIC e office platform by 30th June 2020.

Abu Dhabi hosts World Future Energy Summit.
  • A four-day World Future Energy Summit begins at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi on 13 January 2020.
  • The theme for this year's summit is "Rethinking Global Consumption, Production, and Investment."
  • 33,500 participants from 170 countries and 800 specialist exhibitors are expected to attend the annual event.
  • The 2020 edition includes exhibition and forum programmes across five main pillars: energy, solar, water, waste and smart cities, hosting an unrivalled gathering of top-level government and business leaders.
  • The event will showcase 42 of the world’s most disruptive innovations, selected from 1,402 global submissions from 128 countries, related to the future of energy, food, agriculture and sustainability in space.

Taal volcano erupts near Manila
  • Taal volcano near Manila erupted a massive cloud of ash. About 8,000 residents were evacuated.
  • Taal, one of the world's smallest active volcanoes, sits in the middle of a lake about 70km (45 miles) south of the centre of Manila, Philippines.
  • The Philippines lies on the Ring of Fire, a belt of volcanoes circling the Pacific Ocean that is also prone to earthquakes. There is possibility of tsunami in the lake due to the eruption.
  • Taal has erupted more than 30 times in the past five centuries, most recently in 1977.

Tsai Ing-wen wins President election of Taiwan
  • Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen secured a landslide victory in presidential elections with more than 57% votes. This will be her second term.
  • Her main rival, Han Kuo-yu of the China-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) party, has conceded defeat.

Jasprit Bumrah to receive Polly Umrigar Award

  • Jasprit Bumrah will receive the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for his super Performance in International cricket in the 2018-19 season.
  • He made his Test debut during India's tour of South Africa in January 2018
  • Former Indian Captains Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Anjum Chopra will be presented with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award adn the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award for Women.

India becomes Number one shooting nation in world.
  • According to International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF), India finished the year 2019 as the top shooting nation in the world, leaving behind China and the USA.
  • India topped all the Rifle-Pistol World Cups and Finals in 2019.
  • In terms of overall medals, India have total 30 medals ( 21 Gold, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze), China got total 44 medals ( 11 Gold, 15 Silver, 18 Bronze), America got total 15 medals(6 Gold, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze).

Japan's Kento Momota wins Malaysia Masters
  • Kento Momota won the Malaysia Masters after easily defeating Denmark's Viktor Axelsen 24-22, 21-11 on Sunday.
  • Kento Momota is regarded as world number one Badminton Player.He is known for his explosive movements on court and his unpredictable style of play.
  • He is currently the best player on the planet, won a record 11 titles last year.
