PM Modi on a two day visit to Karnataka
  • PM Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Karnataka from 2January-3January.
  • On the first day of his tour, he took part in the Krishi award function in Tumkuru Junior College.
  • He handed over the Krishi Karman Award to 21 states.
  • He will inaugurate the 107th National Science Congress in Bengaluru on 3 January

Bengaluru University of Agricultural Sciences to host Indian Science Congress
  • The University of Agricultural Sciences in Bengaluru is to host the 107th Indian Science congress.
  • The conference will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. Over 15,000 delegates will attend the ceremony.

Pacific Island Nation Palau bans sunscreen "Reef Toxic"
  • Palau has become the 1st country to ban sunscreen which turns harmful to corals and sea life.
  • From 1st January, any reef-toxic sunscreen imported or sold in Palau will be confiscated and a fine will be imposed on owner.
  • Palau is renowned for its marine life and one of the world's best diving destinations.

BUSINESS

RBI launched "MANI" mobile app

  • Reserve Bank of India has launched Mobile App MANI ( Mobile Aided Note Identifier) to help visually  Impaired people to identify the denomination of currency notes.
  • This App is launched by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das in Mumbai on 1st January 2020. It is available both on Android and IOS operating system.
  • This app is featured to work offline. Users have to scan the notes by camera and the app gives audio output in Hindi and English

Umrao Cissoko elected as Guinea-Bissau President
  • Umrao Cissoko has been elected as president of Guinea-Bissau. He is former PM of Guinea-Bissau.
  • He will replace the Incumbent Presidet Jose Mario Vaz.
  • National Electoral Commissiion (CNE) President Jose Pedro Sambu announce the result.

SPORTS

MS Dhoni picked as Captain of ESPN Cricinfo's ODI

  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked as captain of ESPN Cricinfo's ODI and Twenty20 teams of the decade, while Virat Kohli was named the leader in Tests on 1st January 2020.
  • Former skipper Mithali Raj and fast bowler Jhulan Goswami were named in the same women's team picked for both the ODIs and T20s.
  • Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal, were the only other Indians to make the Test XI.
  • Australia's inspirational cricketer, Meg Lanning was named the captain of the side.
